One of the most useful options for Patient Education is to create documents that can be presented to patients on a tablet. Using our customized interface, any document you build in Patient Education can be used as part of a patient encounter that will take place on a tablet. All documents you want to appear on the tablet must have the Show on Patient List box checked on the main Documents page. Documents that have this checked will appear on your customized tablet interface. Documents that don’t have this checked will be available to print, email, link, etc. but won’t appear on the tablet.
Once you have a few documents created, use the Document List Link button to generate the URL you will use on your tablet to create patient encounters. Access this URL on your tablet and bookmark it there for easy future access. User must login to AMSHub to access these documents, so any user you want to have access should have an account setup in AMSHub in Settings > AMSHub Users. If the user will only need to manage patient encounters, you can simply make them a Patient Education User role. If they will need to create and edit your Patient Education documents, make them an admin.
To see an example of what the tablet experience will be like, you can use our Tablet Emulator. Clicking this button at the top of the Documents page will launch a virtual tablet and show you approximately what an actual tablet interface will look like (there may be minor difference based on the size and type of tablet you choose).
Patient Encounters
A patient encounter is any tablet-based interaction with a patient. When you access the patient education URL on your tablet and login, you’ll be presented with the New Patient button. Click this and enter the patient’s MRN. You can then add any minor patient-specific notes, or just begin selecting the documents you want to present the patient from the library of documents you’ve created. Click the checkbox for any/all documents and then click Start. The tablet can now be handed to the patient. The encounter is self-directed meaning patients can spend as much time as they need reading and reviewing the content on each page before clicking the button to continue. At their own pace they can proceed through the materials provided. When they’ve completed all documents, the tablet will confirm they’re done and a staff member can circle back at their leisure to ensure the patient has completed the documents and answer any questions.
All current patient encounters are displayed on the start page of the tablet interface. Staff members can easily see which patients have completed their documents and any patients who did not complete the process. The staff member can mark completed patient documents Complete, which will end the encounter and file the document completion in AMSHub. Alternatively, they can Continue any incomplete encounters and return the tablet to the patient.
All completed patient encounters are stored in AMSHub for future reference. This Patient History area will log every encounter with by MRN. Each encounter can be viewed to see the day/time each page of the document(s) were reviewed and approved. They can print the documents or email them as needed.
